See Our Newest Foals

At the Suffolk Horse Society, we are working hard with owners of the Suffolk Horse to encourage breeding in order to increase numbers.

With their hard work, dedication and commitment, we are seeing increasing numbers of foals born each year. In 2019, there were 34 foals in total. From February/March onwards, the first foals start to arrive, and as they do, they will be added to the website.

There are now 32 foals!

First foal born using sexed semen

The Suffolk Horse Society are proud to have been a part of an innovative new project, resulting in the first ever birth of a healthy filly foal from sexed semen.

The future of the Suffolk Horse breed depends on having enough filly foals to keep the breed going, and last year there were 19 colt foals born with only 15 filly foals, in the whole of the UK. Now a filly foal has been born, following an innovative approach using sex sorted sperm to determine the gender. It’s the first time in the world that this technique has been used to support the survival of rare breeds.

With fewer than 72 female Suffolk Punches remaining in the UK of breeding age, every female born is vital to the survival of this endangered and iconic British horse.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM CHAIRMAN

"After consulting with all members of the Council, the Executive Committee has, reluctantly, decided that it will not be possible to hold the AGM this year.  This is due to Government restrictions on the holding of meetings which have not been relaxed to the extent that we had hoped.

In place of the AGM we shall hold a meeting of the Council via Zoom on Tuesday 14th July at 6.00 pm.  We shall conduct the formal business normally done at the AGM followed by the business which is normally conducted at the meeting immediately following the AGM.  Trustees will also have the opportunity to raise other business at the end of this meeting.

Regrettably, for similar reasons, it has been decided not to hold the Spectacular this year, nor to put on a display of Suffolk horses at Palace House, Newmarket, in August.
