More support for the Society from the Heritage Lottery Fund
Archive Project will explore the heritage of the Suffolk Punch

The Suffolk Horse Society is delighted to announce its success in securing a grant of £85,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to safeguard, catalogue and use its extensive archive and collection dating back to 1877, to discover more about the heritage of the Suffolk Breed and provide significant volunteering and learning opportunities.

The project focuses on the extensive archive and collection owned by the Suffolk Horse Society. The archive and collection comprises some 22,000 items. These include: books; Trade catalogues; correspondence, ledgers and similar documents; other documents; photographs; paintings, art works and prints; record cards, stallion cards and other horse lineage records. Other artefacts and ephemera which constitute part of the archive and collection are currently stored in a variety of sealed boxes and crates and have not yet been assessed.

Commenting on the award Jeff Hallett, who is the current SHS President and council member leading the project, said:

“We are enormously grateful to the HLF for this award. It reflects the importance of the Suffolk Punch to the history and heritage of our region and the role an archive of this kind can play in telling this story to future generations.”

He went on:  “The project has a wide range of outputs. It will:

  • reveal, review and effectively catalogue and store the archive and collection;
  • digitise and make selected catalogue items, and the catalogue itself freely available on-line;
  • research, develop learning materials and showcase the archive and collection through the production of ‘pop up’ exhibitions;
  • offer exciting volunteering opportunities;
  • support the long-term sustainability of the archive and collection, and the Society as a charity.”

In talking about the project Robyn Llewellyn, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund, East of England said:

“I’m delighted that, as well as cataloguing and conservation, national lottery players’ funding will support pop-up mobile exhibitions so that many more people will discover this rich historic archive.”

The application to the HLF was supported by Suffolk-based heritage consultants Oakmere Solutions Ltd. Outlining the importance of the project Oakmere Director Dr Peter Funnell said:

“The Suffolk Horse Society archive and collection is a good example of a small specialist resource that provides unique insights into the historic significance of the Suffolk Punch breed and the developing nature of agriculture and the land based economy during the 19th and 20th centuries. It has intrinsic heritage value which is worthy of safeguarding.”

He went on:

“The project will deliver benefits to the heritage, to people and to communities. To achieve its aims the project will work effectively with other heritage agencies and develop key sustainable links with schools, colleges and elders groups.”

A project officer will be appointed to co-ordinate activities and recruit, train and support volunteers.
The project will run for two years.
